AFTER REHABBING and selling a large Victorian single-family home in San Francisco, Rafael Galiano and John Martin decided to invest in their own little piece of country heaven. So they purchased an 1865 Victorian farmhouse on the outskirts of Winters and turned it into a stunningly beautiful inn called Park Winters.
Galiano and Martin oversaw a remodel that respected the Victorian architecture while adding 21st-century comforts such as new plumbing, electric, gallery lighting and an integrated sound system. In the 5,000-square-foot main house, they retained the original light fixtures, woodwork and brass hardware and furnished the public rooms on the ground floor with an interesting mash-up of antiques, modern pieces and vivid contemporary art by Greg Galinsky, Daniel Merriam and Ian Stallings. “It’s cool to mix modern with old,” says Galiano. “You don’t want it to feel too much like Granny’s house.”
The 10-acre property includes several buildings, including a three-story water tower (now a guest suite) and a newly constructed event barn for weddings. The lush grounds feature a sunken garden, a swimming pool, a profusion of fig trees and a 3-acre farm that supplies Park Winters with seasonal produce all year long.
