When she decorated her living room, Sacramento interior designer Aimee Griffin opted for a luxe touch, covering one wall in hand-painted chinoiserie wallpaper from the British design house de Gournay. Griffin chose the company’s Badminton design, which depicts birds perched on delicate flowering branches. The panels were painstakingly produced by hand by artisans, who customize the design for each client. “You specify how much negative space you want at the top of the paper and how far you want the branches to go up,” she says. “I told them that there’s some pink in the room, so one of the birds has pink feet. They just did that.” The paper is pricey, starting at close to $1,000 per roll. But Griffin says it’s worth every penny. “Consider it a piece of art,” she says. “It’s like having a canvas on the wall.”
